Eurozone unemployment at euro-era high
refWrite comment: Why is there no Eurozone reformational conference for study toward action [study>action] on thisthematic.  Europe is in an unemployment crisis, a crisis of joblessness.  Our strongest reformational connections are academic, the Christian National Labour Federation in the Netherlands withits 350,000 members do not get sufficient attention from our academics — where are our labour-savy economists? —EconoMix
Unemployment in the eurozone reached a new record last month, in a further sign of the currency bloc’s faltering economic recovery.

Joblessness in the 17 countries that use the euro rose to 10.4 per cent at year end, according to seasonally-adjusted data from the European Union’s statistical arm. The 0.1 percentage point increase from November’s estimate compares to an unemployment rate of 9.5 per cent a year earlier.

A small fall in Germany, from 5.6 to 5.5 per cent, was offset by rises in much of the debt-laden periphery of the eurozone, including a 0.4 percentage point rise in Portugal to 13.6 per cent.

EconomicsGlobal & USA: Slavery today: Sex trafficking is hugely profitable business in USA and worldwide

My Name is Sorrow DVD cover

Movie: My name is Sorrow

The film focuses not on the political issue of human trafficking, but on the human aspect. My Name is Sorrow will give the viewer the opportunity for that human response. By not focusing on the political, global aspects of trafficking, nor sensationalising it with graphic details of abuse, we will focus on the thoughts of one woman, locked away in a room by her 'owners'.
The set is minimal to say the least - with subtle changes in the lighting to suggest different times of the day - the film with around 6mins of intimate scripted talk will cover a whole day in the life of 'Sorrow'. It will be shot in black and white so that the focus is on the character and not trying to discern her whereabouts, for she is anywhere and everywhere. Her thoughts move from anger and guilt to daring for a sight of redemption. In stripping the production bare we allow nothing peripheral to get in the way of the viewer's concentrated gaze on this woman. Sorrow ends by making a silent appeal to the audience. How we respond is of course up to us!

The film has been endorsed by the UK Charity, Unchosen. The Charity raises awareness of human trafficking through film festivals and campaigns. Our film will help provide a new context for this story of human exploitation.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

PRODUCTION & PROGRESS
portrait of Natasha Paulinyi
Trafficking is a global problem, not just a UK or European one. It is estimated by the UN to be a $7 billion per annum industry which effects between 700,000 and 4 million women and children. The scale of this alone is daunting and perhaps difficult to engage with, when asked for a personal response.

Victims of trafficking face numerous violations of their human rights, including: rape, torture, forced abortions, starvation along with threats of torturing or murdering family members.
It was recorded by TEAM, the Tolerance, Equality Awareness Movement that, In August 2001, soldiers with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Eritrea were purchasing ten-year-old girls for sex in local hotels.

The UN involvement in this industry will be capturing
our imagination later this year with a Rachel Weisz
film, 'The Whistleblower', which follows the story of
UN whistleblower Kathryn Bolkovac.

It is regrettable when a peace-keeping force engages
in the exploitation of those who are most vulnerable.

Not only is the scale of the problem daunting, but the
political web around it. We can I feel, lose ourselves
and the will to act in this kind of complexity;
hence we will undertake a different approach with

'My Name is Sorrow'.

PoliticsUSA: Republicans: The dye is cast for Romney's wwin in oncoming primaries and caucuses

Romney Wins Nevada Caucuses

RENO, Nev.—Mitt Romney handily won the Nevada caucuses Saturday, capping a pivotal week that saw him regain his front-runner status on the strength of a hard-fought win in Florida.
With 41% of the precincts counted, the former Massachusetts governor was the top pick of 42% of Republican caucus-goers, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich a distant second with 26.5% of the vote and Texas Rep. Ron Paul in third at 18%.
Mr. Romney's back-to-back, double-digit victories in Florida and Nevada cement his status as the candidate to beat heading into the first extended lull of the Republican nominating contest.

Politics/EconomicsCanada: British Columbia: Petition vs Oil supertanker port for Chinese market?

As of this moment, obstructionists are trying to prevent an oil export port from being developed in British Columbia by waging a petition campaign thru the web facility Change.org.  The obstructionists in BC are a wing of the more general campaign to stop an oil pipeline proposed to carry oil crude (pre-refinement commodity) from southern Alberta thru the USA to Kansas City or some other hub to distribute it in the American heartland.  The reason for the obstructionists BC wingnut operation is a geostrategic manoeuvre of the war against oil and additional supply of the commodity from drilling in North America.  It's also a selfish effort to prevent job-creation (to build the port or the pipeline and maintain them), so that a "Green" utopia may prevail.  I wonder how many of the so-far 445 signers of the petition are laffing it up as they tour around in their automobiles, trucks, snowmobiles, lawnmowers, airplanes, and other oil-fuelled machines.

Today, I signed a different petition circulated by Change.org -- to free Nigerian labour activists (petition sponsored by Damian Ugwu and Social Justice Advocacy Initiative, endorsed by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and a total of 33 Nigerian groups (they are not listed, so I coudn't analyze them).

Lamentably, one cannot tell from the info that Change.org provides whether there is a single Nigerian group among them that advocates a plurality of workers representation where unions get only proportional standing (no monopoly unionism) and are not tied into political cawzes that are not directly and only related to conditions of work, employment standards, workers health and safety in the workplace (checkoff of dues under anti-pluralist monopoly unionism where winner of the workers vote takes all representation power in its relation to the company, the government, and any damn political cawz that the elite or the unquestioning majority of members toward which they want to direct union-collected money -- paid by check of dues of all members).  This is how professional petition circulators deceive the public and benefit from ignorance regarding the cawzes which benefit.  Another nonprofit org that I support, Fairfood, recently tried to get me to sign a petition to oppose child labour in, if I recall correctly, coffee or tea plantation fields in developing countries.  But the problem of child labour where there are no schools, where HIV/AIDs has decimated the adult population, and other conditions is not solved by artificial pressure from the outside that the children working in the fields do not find to be in their own best interest.  Fairfood did not debate its move in the public arena of even its own supporters, as it assumed that the standards of Western industrial relations can be imposed everywhere else in the world, even under very different circumstances.  How about giving the kids who want to work a pay raise, allowing only a half-day's work per day, and increasing the number of adults and kids who get this more advanced daily income.  Maybe the governments involved coud forego personal income taxes on the kids, but then that woud de-incentivize adults from taking these field jobs.

Back to the building of oil-tanker ports in BC for the export of Alberta oil to China and the rest of Asia:  if the Americans don't want Alberta oil (ostensibly to protect the environment but we must ask what hidden agenda is functioning in the prohibition), then let the BC wingnutty envros come up with an alternative that doesn't cut down the job creation that otherwise woud accrue to the BC jobless (and jobless from other provinces as well), instead of keeping them perpetually on welfare handouts to the expense of all the taxpayers.  At the same time, the BC govt should insist that a cash deposit shoud be put in escrow to cover any expenses should a tanker spill its cargo onto the BC coastline.  Thus, emergency workers coud be kept in a state of readiness that woud lead to compensation for them (more jobs) should such a painful situation occur.  But, let's build the oil hub in the best location/s for a BC oil crude export centre.

Back to the oil workers in Nigeria:  what kind of unionism is the left and the "human rights" orgs promoting in Nigeria?  And:  did the charged unionists murder the police officer as the Nigerian govt charges?  We can't depend on the Left to tell the truth, any more than the ideologues of the Right.  We need independent verification, to which Change.org dec+dedly does not point us.

Tell Parliament:
Keep oil supertanker traffic away from B.C.'s coastline

Targeting: Governments of Canada and British Colombia
Sponsored by: Dogwood Initiative

There are three proposals to bring more and bigger oil supertankers to British Columbia's coast, so that Alberta's oilsands crude can be shipped to China and Asia. If this is allowed to happen, most British Columbians would benefit little and B.C.'s resplendent coast would be threatened by oil spills.
The Alberta and federal governments are pushing for these oil tankers. They're using a review process that's rigged in their favour. But B.C. has a history of defending its coast and an epic struggle is underway.
You can't eliminate and can't predict oil spills. They happen because humans make mistakes and machines break.
A single oil spill could devastate lives, livelihoods, cultures and wildlife on our coast.
There's no need to accept the risk. Far more jobs would be put at risk than created in B.C., and since oil is non-renewable we think it's better to keep more Canadian oil in Canada for our children to use if they need to.
Together, we can create victory for our coast. Sign this petition to stop more supertanker traffic along B.C.’s coast!

PoliticsUSA: Weather: President Obama calls for equal distribution of the weather

Our own refWrite reporter on the scene for the American President's most recent stirring call to the nation was part of the great theme of equality with which he underlies all his legislative moves.  This is a President who clearly wants distributive justice that encourages all of us to sleep in, even when we're in perfectly good health.  Altho it is known just how many dollars (in the billions) it costs America's businesses, especially the big ones, to finance workers when they take their sick leaves to go to baseball games, afternoon shopping, etc; it is well known that this gives 'sick' a bad name.  It hurts those who are genuinely sick and need to take the day off, but it also hurts working moms who have no one else to look after the kids when one of them is sick.  Sick is sick, and free-time hungry workers shoud not be charging the company for hours they've removed from productivity.

But, what's charged to the less-productive corporations is not quite the same as playing the same kind of sick when the govt employs you.  Whatever tier of govt such a worker is employed — whether it be federal, state, or local govt — redistribution of gainful-employment compensation takes money from taxpayers, inflates the budgets of govt agencies, and moves the public in increasing measure to despise all govt workers — whether members in labor unions or not. Whether its sick days or not, the companies, unions, and rank-and-file workers, try their best to equalize matters by granting a formal number of days for which sickness is compensated at the same rate as work.  The goal of course is not compassion to the sick or mom's of sick children, rather the goal is equality.  Becawz it is noticed that euqality in this circumstance is not fair, some corporations allow hard working employees who are never sick and never use up their free sick-days quota to bank them into a bundle number that can be directed to the never-sick employee's benefit, by adding each saved day's equal compensation to the super-healthy employee's annual vacation days.  Which may vary, again by contract, according to an employee's seniority with the company.

However, the recent clamor of unions, workers, and some companies for tax-breaks or other monetary compensation for differential benefits due to the the differentials in weather in their locales, now registering h+ on the Richter scale, sees the masterful-skilled President seizing his own opportunity. He  has seen the gaping opportunity to enter the fray and fill the gap in his election numbers by tragetting weather-differentiation complaints among voters.  Yesterday, he called on congress to produce legislation to compensate for weather differentials across the nation which he is ready to sign into law tomorrow.  The President in a widely-viewed video conference call to Harry Reid, majority leader in the Senate, and to Nancy Pelosi, minority leader in the House of Representatives, went viral on YouTube during the day.  Harry chimed in, "The Senate will get this done quickly to equalize the gains by workers who have more sunshine and temperate indicators on the hot/cold scale."  Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House, also chimed in, altho she coudn't make the same claims, since her party no longer has the majority in what used to be "her House."

As for the Republicans, they united to reply in chorus, "We've been left out in the  cold."

The weather-compensation package will cost the govt nearly a trillion dollars annually, and in the President's announcement he stated that the funds woud probably come from a new Fair Weather Agency (FWA) financed by China's military banks.  This is bound to make the Republicans hot.
